Nikos Tornaritis criticizes Averof Neofytou over Russia energy sanctions proposal
On October 16, 2026, Nikos Tornaritis, a political advisor to the President of Cyprus and former parliamentary spokesperson for the Democratic Rally (DISY), issued a public statement condemning a recent proposal by former DISY leader Averof Neofytou. Neofytou had suggested that Cyprus should reconsider the European Union's energy sanctions currently imposed on Russia.
Tornaritis argued that such a proposal undermines the Republic of Cyprus's European orientation and credibility. He emphasized that as a small nation currently dealing with the consequences of the Turkish invasion and occupation, Cyprus relies heavily on the principles of international law, territorial integrity, and European solidarity. He stated that the country cannot afford the contradiction of seeking EU solidarity while questioning its consistency regarding sanctions.
Furthermore, Tornaritis questioned whether Neofytou’s position represents his personal views or the current official policy of the Democratic Rally party. He highlighted that the issue carries significant political weight, given Neofytou's past leadership role, and warned that the suggestion could hinder Cyprus's efforts to secure deeper EU involvement in resolving the Cyprus problem.
