Newborn in critical condition with Legionnaires' disease following clinic contamination
A newborn is in critical condition and on mechanical ventilation at Makarios Hospital in Nicosia after being diagnosed with Legionnaires' disease. The infant had been born at a private clinic in Nicosia, returned home, and later developed severe respiratory symptoms, leading to hospitalization. Following the diagnosis, the Ministry of Health conducted water quality inspections at the clinic and the infant's home. Preliminary tests confirmed the presence of the bacterium Legionella pneumophila at two points within the clinic's water supply network.
As a precautionary measure, the Ministry of Health has ordered a temporary suspension of all medical services at the private clinic. All other newborns previously housed at the facility have been transferred to other hospitals. The Minister of Health, Neofytos Charalambides, has stated that officials are investigating the potential source of the infection and will take all necessary legal actions if it is found that regulations were not followed. While epidemiological investigations are ongoing, no other confirmed cases linked to the clinic have been reported at this time. Final laboratory results are expected in the coming days to determine the extent of the contamination.
