Energy cooperation between Cyprus and the United States
On Friday, October 16, 2026, the Cypriot Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry, Michael Damianos, met with United States Senator Rick Scott in Nicosia to discuss strategic energy cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean. The talks focused on regional security, supply diversification, and the importance of critical infrastructure protection.
Minister Damianos emphasized that ending Cyprus' energy isolation remains a strategic priority, specifically highlighting the Great Sea Interconnector project, which aims to link the electricity grids of Cyprus, Greece, and Israel. The officials also reviewed the 3+1 cooperation framework involving Cyprus, Greece, Israel, and the U.S. Furthermore, they discussed the ongoing involvement of American energy firms in the Cypriot exclusive economic zone, noting the presence of Chevron at the Aphrodite gas field and ExxonMobil at the Glafcos and Pegasus fields.
Senator Scott reaffirmed Cyprus' role as a vital U.S. ally, underscoring the necessity of protecting the nation's sovereignty and energy security. The discussions reinforced the commitment to developing reliable energy corridors to Europe and strengthening regional coordination among the partners.
