Ebola outbreak expands in Democratic Republic of Congo and spreads to Kenya
The Ebola virus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has reached North Ubangi, marking the eighth province affected by the Bundibugyo species. Authorities report that this epidemic, which began in mid-May, has resulted in over 9,000 cases and 4,000 deaths, making it the second-largest on record. Two new cases were confirmed in the Wapinda health zone following suspicious deaths in a local mining area, while the virus continues to circulate in other provinces including Ituri and North Kivu.
Simultaneously, Kenya has confirmed its first domestic transmission of the virus. The total count in Kenya reached seven cases after four new infections, including three health workers who treated the index patient, were reported on October 17. The index patient, who had traveled from Congo through Uganda, arrived in Nairobi on October 3 and passed away on October 5. While these cases represent the first spread within Kenya, health officials maintain that 98.5% of identified contacts have been traced and quarantined. Authorities emphasize that there is currently no evidence of wider community transmission, and the patients receiving treatment are showing stable or improving conditions.
