Violent student and labor protests erupt across major Italian cities
A series of significant demonstrations took place in major Italian cities, including Turin, Rome, Milan, and Bologna, between October 16 and October 18, 2026. Protesters gathered to express opposition to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s policies, focusing on education, housing, and military spending. Tensions reached a breaking point in Milan, where clashes between demonstrators and police led to at least 40 injured protesters and two injured officers, alongside 50 arrests. In the city center, specifically near the Duomo, individuals masked to conceal their identities engaged in looting and vandalism, causing stores to close and disrupting tourism.
In Rome, a union representing 4.5 million members organized a large-scale march to contest the government's trajectory. Union leader Maurizio Landini announced a general strike scheduled for November 20, coinciding with a European-wide student strike. Prime Minister Meloni and Elly Schlein, secretary of the Democratic Party, have condemned the violence. Italian authorities are currently working to restore order as the government evaluates the widespread property damage and assesses the impact of these confrontations on national stability.
