Journalist Despina Rousou receives 'Protiou Zois' award for her advocacy work
Despina Rousou, a prominent journalist with 36 years of experience at the Third Program of the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC), has been honored with the 'Protiou Zois' award. The distinction was presented during the 21st Madame Figaro 'Women of the Year 2026' awards ceremony, held in memory of Andis Hadjicostis, known for his humanitarian contributions.
Rousou, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at the age of 28, kept her condition a secret for many years while continuing her professional duties. She initially struggled with the diagnosis and hid her worsening motor symptoms to avoid public stigma. However, she eventually chose to go public with her condition, transforming her personal struggle into a platform for advocacy. By sharing her experience, she became a voice for other individuals battling invisible diseases and working to secure their rights.
Her career has been defined by her dual commitment to broadcasting and patient advocacy. Her public disclosure and continued professional success serve as a significant contribution to raising awareness about multiple sclerosis, changing the public narrative surrounding chronic illness in Cyprus.
