Limassol municipality to acquire historic Rialto Theatre
The historic Rialto Theatre, located on Heroes’ Square in Limassol, is set to be transferred to the Limassol Municipality following a recent Cabinet decision. This development concludes a long-standing ownership issue for the venue, which was founded in the 1930s and is considered a key piece of the city's cultural heritage. The state will support the transition with phased funding: 250,000 euros in 2026, 125,000 euros in 2027, and 75,000 euros in 2028, after which state subsidies will cease. The theatre’s 12 permanent employees will retain their status, benefits, and working conditions under the new municipal ownership structure.
The theatre’s future was secured through a citizens' campaign that began in September 1990. At that time, activist Evis Michaelides and architect Maximos Pantelides mobilized to prevent the demolition of the building, which was slated to be replaced by a car park. The recent administrative transfer follows renewed public pressure from the arts community and city residents, ensuring the preservation of the landmark for future generations.
