UN Security Council discusses ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza
During an open UN Security Council session on the Middle East, Greece’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Aglaia Balta, called for a consolidated ceasefire, the protection of civilians, and the advancement of a two-state solution. The session addressed the persistent instability in the region and the critical humanitarian situation following the October 2025 truce.
Ramiz Alakbarov, acting Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, reported that approximately 1,500 Palestinians, including over 320 children, have been killed in Israeli military operations since the ceasefire began. Nearly all of Gaza's 2.1 million residents currently require housing assistance, with the International Organization for Migration noting that available supplies meet only 17% of basic needs. Additionally, in the West Bank, more than 1,600 settler attacks were recorded through mid-September, resulting in the displacement of over 4,300 Palestinians.
Ambassador Balta reiterated that the two-state solution remains the only viable path to lasting peace. The international community continues to monitor the situation, as the lack of adequate water, sanitation, and essential resources poses an ongoing risk to the displaced population, emphasizing the urgent need for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict.
