Former Swedish MP calls for Turkish troop withdrawal from Cyprus and NATO integration
Magnus Sjödahl, a former member of the Swedish Parliament and a politician from the Christian Democrats, has publicly advocated for the complete withdrawal of Turkish troops from Cyprus. In a recent interview with Greek Radio and News in Florida, Sjödahl suggested that the security of Cyprus could be significantly enhanced if the Republic of Cyprus were to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
Sjödahl maintains a personal historical connection to the island, having served as a member of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) between 1978 and 1979. Drawing on his peacekeeping experience, he emphasized that the presence of foreign military forces remains an impediment to lasting stability in the region.
While the proposal for NATO membership reflects his perspective on current geopolitical challenges, there is no immediate indication of official policy shifts regarding the Cypriot accession process. The commentary highlights ongoing international discussions concerning the status of the island and the potential for collective security arrangements in the Eastern Mediterranean.
