Violent protests continue in Albania for the sixth day
Anti-government protests in Albania entered their sixth day on October 18, 2026, centering on the capital city of Tirana. Demonstrators, led primarily by students, are demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama, citing widespread government corruption, lack of employment opportunities, high cost of living, and dissatisfaction with the quality of higher education. The unrest has spread to several other cities, including Lezhe, Durres, Shkoder, Vlore, Gjirokaster, and Korce.
The demonstrations have turned violent, with incidents involving Molotov cocktails, arson against public buildings and banks, and the looting of businesses. Authorities have deployed anti-riot forces, including the special unit RENEA, using tear gas, flashbang grenades, and water cannons. According to initial reports, over 500 people have been detained, with more than 300 arrests and over 200 injuries recorded since the protests began on Tuesday. Demonstrators have targeted key sites, including the Prime Minister's office, the Supreme Court, and the Socialist Party headquarters.
Prime Minister Edi Rama has refused to resign, instead offering a dialogue with protesters while warning that those engaging in violence and destruction will face legal consequences. As of now, police remain on high alert while protesters continue to gather outside the Ministry of Education, indicating that the standoff persists despite the government's call for calm.
