Barcelona equals 58-year-old record with dominant La Liga start

Barcelona continued their perfect start to the 2026/27 La Liga season with a 5-2 victory over Real Betis at La Cartuja on October 17, 2026. This win marks the club's ninth consecutive victory in the league, allowing them to equal the historic record set by Real Madrid in the 1968/69 season. Under manager Hansi Flick, the team has been prolific, scoring 39 goals and conceding only nine across their league campaign so far.

The match featured a notable goal from Lamine Yamal and saw a physical incident involving Bernal, who received a red card for an attempted headbutt on Yamal. Midfielder Fermin Lopez also made headlines for a touching post-match interaction with his grandmother. Barcelona currently holds a nine-point lead over Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid, whom they are scheduled to face in the upcoming El Clasico at the Camp Nou on October 25. A victory in that match would secure the outright record for the best start to a league season in Spanish football history.
