President Christodoulides and Tufan Erhurman schedule meeting amid negotiations stalemate
President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman are scheduled to meet on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. under United Nations auspices. The meeting aims to achieve meaningful progress toward resuming reunification negotiations, which have remained stalled due to conflicting expectations regarding preconditions and the framework for a solution. The Greek Cypriot side insists on returning to the agreed negotiation framework, while the Turkish Cypriot side has emphasized a desire for prior agreement on issues such as a rotating presidency as a prerequisite for political equality.
Recent tensions have escalated following an interview given by Erhurman to the newspaper Politis, in which he accused the Greek Cypriot leadership of undermining trust and demanded specific political concessions. President Christodoulides responded by criticizing the Turkish side for imposing rigid preconditions that hinder dialogue. Despite these frictions, both sides have expressed a willingness to continue high-level communication. President Christodoulides has also announced that he and Erhurman have received dates from the United Nations for a potential trilateral meeting with the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy, Maria Angela Holguin, to occur within October. The President further expressed hope that the upcoming talks might yield positive developments, potentially including the opening of a new crossing point.
