Large-scale drone attacks hit St. Petersburg and multiple Ukrainian cities
On October 18, 2026, intense cross-border drone strikes occurred between Russia and Ukraine. Ukrainian forces launched a major drone attack on the Leningrad region, with Russian air defenses reporting the interception of 126 drones. The strikes caused fires at an oil terminal in St. Petersburg and damaged civilian infrastructure across three districts. A data center was also targeted, though the service provider reported continued operations. Pulkovo International Airport implemented operational restrictions as a safety precaution, and no casualties were reported in Russia.
Simultaneously, Russian forces launched a retaliatory wave of 180 drones against Ukraine, with 152 reportedly intercepted. Attacks in Zaporizhzhia killed one woman and injured two others, causing damage to residential buildings, vehicles, and an educational institution. In Poltava, another woman died and four people were injured due to drone strikes affecting nine residential buildings. Furthermore, strikes in the Vinnytsia region targeted critical infrastructure, resulting in power outages. Regional authorities in both nations continue to assess the extensive damage caused by the overnight aerial engagements.
