Large-scale drone exchanges between Ukraine and Russia
On October 18, 2026, a major escalation in drone warfare occurred as Ukraine launched a widespread attack on Russian territory, while Russia conducted retaliatory strikes across Ukraine. Russian officials reported the interception of 126 drones over the Leningrad region and nearly 200 heading toward Moscow. The Ukrainian assault caused fires at a petroleum terminal in Saint Petersburg and damaged civilian infrastructure in three districts. Pulkovo International Airport temporarily restricted operations, and a data center in the Leningrad region was also targeted.
Simultaneously, Russian forces struck targets in Ukraine using 180 drones, of which 152 were reportedly intercepted. These attacks resulted in at least two deaths in Zaporizhzhia and Poltava, alongside damage to 20 apartment buildings and critical infrastructure in the Vinnytsia region, causing power outages. On October 19, a subsequent Russian drone strike in the Kharkiv region killed two women and an infant in a public park.
Authorities report no casualties in the Saint Petersburg petroleum facility incident. Regional military administrations are currently assessing the extent of damage to energy and residential infrastructure. No formal end to the current escalation has been announced as military activity persists across multiple regions.
