Candidates begin positioning for 2028 Cyprus presidential elections
As political maneuvering intensifies ahead of the 2028 presidential elections in Cyprus, former DISY leader Averof Neofytou has formally announced his intent to seek his party's nomination. Speaking from the site of the unfinished Vasiliko energy project, Neofytou emphasized the need for a change in governance, citing economic hardships such as high inflation, energy costs, and the housing crisis, while warning that the ongoing stalemate in the Cyprus problem poses significant risks to the nation’s unity.
In response, DISY President Annita Demetriou declared that the party is focused on winning and has signaled readiness to explore strategic alliances, including potential second-round cooperation with President Nikos Christodoulides, to prevent the return of left-wing governance. Meanwhile, AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou noted that his party is currently prioritizing the formation of a broader political front and a shared governing program rather than selecting a specific candidate at this stage.
Additionally, British-Cypriot businessman John Christodoulou confirmed his interest in the presidency, stating that he will announce his final decision in early 2027. Christodoulou, who identified himself as a refugee, expressed confidence in his ability to address the Cyprus problem and improve national security and welfare, despite warnings from friends regarding the impact on his personal life.
