Anorthosis appoints Barak Itzhaki as new head coach
Anorthosis Famagusta officially appointed 42-year-old Israeli coach Barak Itzhaki as their new head coach on October 20, 2026. This decision follows the dismissal of Nestor El Maestro, who was released after a poor start to the season where the team recorded five losses in six league matches, culminating in a 1-0 defeat to Omonia 29M. The termination of El Maestro’s contract, alongside his staff, is expected to cost the club approximately 50,000 euros in compensation.
Itzhaki is a familiar figure to the club, having played for Anorthosis during the 2012-13 season. His previous managerial experience includes time with Maccabi Tel Aviv and Beitar Jerusalem, where he led the team to a second-place finish and a Toto Cup victory in 2025. Following his appointment, the club’s president, Christos Maragos, held an emergency meeting at the training ground to sternly address the squad, demanding improved discipline and a change in mentality. Players were warned that they remain under constant evaluation.
Itzhaki is expected to begin his duties immediately and is scheduled to lead the team in the upcoming match against Omonia Aradippou on October 24. His tactical approach focuses on high-pressing, possession-based football and a 4-3-3 formation.
