Anorthosis fires Nestor El Maestro following poor league start

Anorthosis Famagusta has officially parted ways with coach Nestor El Maestro following a dismal start to the season. The decision came on October 19, 2026, after the team suffered a 0-1 defeat against Omonia 29M in Peristerona. This result marked the club's fifth loss in their opening six matches, leaving them in the relegation zone with only three points, having scored only four goals while conceding thirteen.

The team's poor performance triggered protests from fans, who jeered players after the match. Following El Maestro's dismissal, the club’s management, led by Christos Maragos, has moved quickly to identify a replacement. Reports indicate that the club is in advanced talks with former Anorthosis player Barak Itzhaki to take over the coaching duties, with a final decision expected within the coming days. The team is aiming for an immediate tactical shift to climb out of the bottom of the standings.
