Anorthosis parts ways with coach Nestor El Maestro after poor season start
Anorthosis Famagusta has officially terminated the contract of head coach Nestor El Maestro following a dismal start to the 2026 season. The decision was confirmed on October 19, 2026, following a 1-0 defeat to Omonia 29M in Peristerona, which marked the club's fifth loss in the first six matches of the championship. The team currently sits in the penultimate position of the league table with only three points, having struggled with both a poor defense that conceded 13 goals and an inefficient attack.
Following the final whistle of the match against Omonia 29M, the team faced intense hostility and whistling from traveling supporters. Club management, led by Christos Marangos, determined that the Serbian coach could no longer facilitate the necessary competitive improvement. As the club looks to recover, they are already in advanced negotiations with former Anorthosis player Barak Itzhaki. The 42-year-old Israeli coach, who previously played for the team in the 2012-2013 season, is the primary candidate to take over, with media reports suggesting a potential two-year agreement could be finalized within 24 hours.
