Migrant boat collision leaves six dead off the coast of Lesbos
On October 19, 2026, a fatal maritime incident occurred 3.5 nautical miles south of Agrilia, Lesbos, when a high-speed vessel transporting migrants collided with a Hellenic Coast Guard patrol boat. The collision resulted in the deaths of six individuals, including four men, one woman, and an infant. Coast guard authorities reported that the incident took place during an interception operation when the migrant vessel attempted to evade authorities by maneuvering, ultimately striking the left side of the patrol craft and capsizing.
Following the crash, a search and rescue operation was coordinated by the Joint Search and Rescue Coordination Center. Fourteen survivors—identified as Syrian and Palestinian nationals—were rescued and transported to the Mytilene General Hospital for medical treatment. Among the survivors, authorities arrested a 37-year-old Turkish national suspected of being the boat’s operator and human smuggler. One survivor, identified as the suspect, suffered a fracture, while others received treatment for various injuries, including head trauma and orthopedic issues. Greek Shipping Minister Vassilis Kikilias condemned the traffickers and reiterated the government's stance of zero tolerance toward migrant smuggling. A formal investigation into the circumstances of the incident is currently ongoing, as authorities work to ensure all legal procedures are followed.
