U.S. Air Force member dies during rappelling demonstration at Alamodome
A tragic incident occurred on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at the Alamodome stadium in San Antonio, Texas, when a member of the U.S. Air Force died following a fall during a rappelling demonstration. The event took place in front of over 23,000 spectators just before a college football game between the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and the U.S. Naval Academy. The soldier, assigned to Detachment 2 of the 6th Combat Training Squadron based at Nellis Air Force Base, was participating in a "Salute to Armed Forces and Veterans" ceremony.
Four soldiers were scheduled to perform a coordinated rappelling maneuver from the stadium's ceiling, which stands approximately 50 to 52 meters above the field. During the descent, the airman lost control and fell to the ground. Medical personnel immediately rendered aid on the field, and the soldier was transported to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The incident caused a 10-minute delay to the start of the football match. Investigations into the safety protocols of the exercise and the specific cause of the fall are expected to follow as the military manages the aftermath of this fatality.
