Russian foreign minister visits Tehran to mediate amid regional tensions
On October 19, 2026, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrived in Tehran for his first visit since the outbreak of hostilities in February, which were triggered by U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iran. The visit aims to position Russia as a key mediator to prevent a large-scale war. Lavrov held discussions with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, focusing on regional security in the Persian Gulf and the stabilization of energy markets, stressing that price volatility does not serve Russia's interests.
During a joint press conference, Araghchi reiterated Iran’s commitment to a 'seven-day proposal' previously submitted to the United States via Qatar, which demands the lifting of maritime blockades and oil sanctions to normalize navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. Araghchi blamed the U.S. and Israel for regional insecurity, calling for a security agreement among local nations without the involvement of foreign powers. Both ministers reaffirmed their commitment to the twenty-year strategic partnership agreement between Russia and Iran.
Looking ahead, the diplomatic efforts continue as Russia seeks to facilitate dialogue in the face of the current deadlock between Tehran and Washington. Lavrov was also scheduled to meet with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to further coordinate strategies regarding security in the Middle East and the sovereignty of nations like Lebanon.
