Nicosia General Hospital accident and emergency department renovated
President Nikos Christodoulides officially inaugurated the renovated and expanded Accident and Emergency Department (A&E) at Nicosia General Hospital on October 19, 2026. The project, which involved an investment of 4.1 million euros, was co-funded by the European Union through the Recovery and Resilience Plan. The upgrade aims to improve patient reception and care conditions while easing the workload for medical personnel. Notable enhancements include a dedicated room for relatives to receive updates from doctors and a rest area for staff, both designed to improve the quality and privacy of emergency services.
During the event, President Christodoulides emphasized that upgrading A&E departments nationwide is a government priority, viewing healthcare as a crucial investment rather than just a financial expense. The State Health Services Organization (OKYPY) is implementing a four-point action plan at the Nicosia facility, including a trauma center, a specialized pediatric area, a short-stay unit, and outpatient clinics for non-emergency cases. Plans are also underway to introduce dedicated communication rooms for families across all public hospitals to ensure patient privacy. The President noted his personal experience of visiting the department with his children, praising the staff's exemplary response during regular, unannounced visits.
