Nicosia General Hospital unveils renovated emergency department
On October 19, 2026, President Nikos Christodoulides inaugurated the renovated and expanded Accident and Emergency Department (A&E) at Nicosia General Hospital. The project, representing an investment of 4.1 million euros, was co-funded by the European Union through the Recovery and Resilience Plan. The upgrades are designed to enhance patient reception, improve care standards, and facilitate the working conditions of medical staff.
Key additions to the facility include a dedicated area for relatives to receive updates from doctors and a rest area for healthcare workers, along with specialized zones for trauma, pediatrics, short-term stays, and mental health assessment. President Christodoulides noted that he has personally visited the A&E twice with his daughters since taking office, emphasizing that he followed standard patient procedures on both occasions. The government considers health and education top priorities, viewing these infrastructure improvements as essential long-term investments.
The State Health Services Organization (OKYPY) is currently implementing a four-axis action plan to reduce patient waiting times and improve efficiency across all public hospitals. This broader strategy aims to protect patient privacy and optimize the use of medical services by encouraging citizens to visit appropriate facilities based on their specific health needs.
