Greece inaugurates Daedalus national supercomputer at Lavrio
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis officially inaugurated the national supercomputer "Daedalus" on October 19, 2026, at the Technology and Cultural Park of Lavrio. Housed within the former Lavrio Power Station, the facility represents a 58.9 million euro investment implemented by the National Infrastructures for Research and Technology (GRNET).
The system is currently ranked 31st globally on the TOP500 list, boasting a measured performance of 85.69 petaflops, and holds the 23rd position on the Green500 index for energy efficiency. Daedalus will serve as the core infrastructure for the PHAROS Artificial Intelligence factory, providing computational resources to universities, research centers, startups, and public entities. Its capabilities will support complex simulations, big data processing, and AI model training in sectors such as medicine, climate science, energy, and transportation.
During the ceremony, Prime Minister Mitsotakis emphasized the necessity of investing in sovereign technological infrastructure to ensure digital autonomy. The project marks a significant milestone in Greece’s digital transformation strategy, aiming to position the nation as a key player in the global artificial intelligence landscape.
