Nicosia police address illegal e-scooter stunts ahead of planned Halloween protest
Authorities in Nicosia are currently monitoring a wave of reckless e-scooter behavior, including illegal group stunts and high-speed riding on main roads, which have been frequently publicized by minors on social media. Police have issued over 7,600 out-of-court fines since the beginning of the year for various traffic violations involving personal mobility devices. However, the police currently lack the legal authority to seize these devices, as a ministerial decree granting such powers is still pending legal vetting and ministerial approval.
Tensions have escalated following reports of an organized 'ride-out' scheduled for October 31 at 5:30 p.m. at Lidra Parking. Organizers have circulated posters and videos on social media mocking law enforcement and media coverage, declaring the event as a form of 'revenge' for efforts to regulate their activities. Police have confirmed they are investigating this material to identify participants and prevent potential accidents. The crackdown follows a concerning rise in road safety incidents, with two deaths of personal mobility device users reported this year, compared to zero in previous years. Traffic officials maintain that scooters are strictly prohibited on roads with speed limits exceeding 30 km/h.
