Record-breaking El Niño event forecast to impact global weather patterns
International climate agencies, including the UK Met Office and China’s National Climate Center, have warned that the 2026-27 El Niño event is shaping up to be the most powerful on record. This climate phenomenon, originating in the Pacific Ocean due to weakening trade winds that shift warm surface waters from the east towards the west, is expected to have significant global consequences, extending its impact far beyond its point of origin.
For Cyprus, the Department of Meteorology expects a notably wetter start to the winter season. Dr. Filippos Tymvios, the department's director, noted that rainfall between October and December could be 20–70% above average, with the strongest signals for increased precipitation expected throughout October. However, officials emphasize that these forecasts represent statistical trends rather than absolute guarantees of a consistently wet winter. As the event develops, global agencies continue to monitor its influence on temperatures and wider atmospheric circulation patterns, noting that the sheer magnitude of this El Niño makes it an unprecedented meteorological event in modern forecasting history.
