Cyprus and Qatar agree on closer security and justice cooperation
On Monday, October 19, 2026, Cyprus Justice and Public Order Minister Costas Fitiris held high-level meetings in Doha to strengthen bilateral relations between Cyprus and Qatar. During his official visit, Minister Fitiris met with Qatar's Minister of Interior, Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, and the Minister of Justice and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs, Ibrahim bin Ali Al-Mohannadi.
The primary outcome of these discussions was the agreement to establish a joint interministerial committee, designed to coordinate and advance mutual cooperation in the areas of justice and public security. The parties emphasized the importance of exchanging expertise, combating organized crime, enhancing maritime security, and protecting critical infrastructure. Similar mechanisms for interministerial coordination were proposed for matters under the jurisdiction of the Qatari Ministry of Interior.
To facilitate the practical implementation of these agreements, the officials scheduled reciprocal visits for the Qatari ministers to Cyprus. These forthcoming visits are intended to finalize memoranda of cooperation across various sectors and solidify the ongoing security partnerships between the two nations.
