Limassol officials demand re-evaluation of 2027 state budget
On October 19, 2026, the mayors of Greater Limassol—specifically Limassol, Amathounta, Kourion, and Polemidia—along with the Limassol Chamber of Commerce and Industry (EVEL), issued a joint statement calling for an immediate re-evaluation of the 2027 state budget. The officials expressed severe dissatisfaction, arguing that the currently proposed budget, which has already been submitted to the House of Representatives, neglects critical infrastructure needs for the city.
The core of the grievance lies in the lack of funding designated for tackling Limassol's chronic traffic congestion. According to the data provided, out of a total of €1.5 billion earmarked for development projects nationwide, only three projects valued at €57 million are allocated to Limassol. This amounts to just 3.8% of the total development budget, a figure the local leadership deems insufficient to meet the city's modern requirements and economic competitiveness.
Local leaders emphasize that the current traffic situation has reached a breaking point, negatively impacting the daily lives of residents and the productivity of local businesses. They are now demanding clear commitments and established timelines from the government to address these infrastructure gaps. The situation remains an active point of contention as the budget proceeds through the legislative process.
