Estia newspaper marks 150th anniversary in Cyprus
On October 19, 2026, the historic Greek newspaper Estia celebrated its 150th anniversary during a special event held at the Ceremonial Hall of the University of Cyprus in Nicosia. The event, titled '150 Years Estia – Greece – Cyprus,' focused on the long-standing relationship between the publication and the island, highlighting the newspaper's role in influencing historical and political discourse regarding Hellenism.
During the event, Estia's director Manolis Kottakis and publisher Ioannis Filippakis emphasized the newspaper's commitment to truth and its ongoing role as a voice for Cyprus within the Athenian political elite. Filippakis noted the publication's historical support for the union of Cyprus with Greece, dating back to the British colonial period. The event was further marked by an address from Archbishop Georgios of Cyprus, who acknowledged the significance of the newspaper's 150-year legacy in public life.
The speakers reaffirmed that Estia aims to remain a defender of Cyprus's interests, promoting national unity rather than division. The celebration served to bridge the past with current challenges facing the region, reinforcing the newspaper's intent to continue its long-term editorial policy regarding Cypriot affairs.
