Australian lawmaker Helen Haines critically injured in deliberate car attack
Independent Australian lawmaker Helen Haines, 65, remains in critical condition after being deliberately struck by a vehicle outside her electoral office in Wangaratta on Monday, October 19. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed the incident was an intentional act, noting that the attacker performed a U-turn before hitting the MP. Haines, who represents the seat of Indi, suffered severe injuries that resulted in the amputation of one leg, with doctors continuing to work to save the other limb.
The suspect has been identified as 43-year-old Brendan Nugent, a resident of Tarrawingee. He was restrained by bystanders at the scene before being arrested by police. Nugent appeared in court on Wednesday to face multiple charges, including dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and the Commonwealth offense of causing harm to a public official. Additionally, he faces charges related to cannabis cultivation and possession. During the court appearance, the defense stated that Nugent suffers from a rare neurological condition known as idiopathic.
While a counter-terrorism taskforce was involved in the initial investigation, authorities have not yet confirmed a specific motive for the attack. The incident has prompted national discourse regarding the safety of politicians and the influence of online political hostility. The accused is currently in custody as the legal proceedings continue.
