UN Security Council unanimously adopts Greek resolution on child protection in digital space
On October 20, 2026, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 2832, a document introduced by Greece concerning the impact of digital technologies on child rights violations in armed conflicts. The meeting was chaired by Greece’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Aglaia Balta, as Greece currently holds the Council presidency for October. The resolution, which garnered over 90 co-sponsorships, focuses on both the exploitation of children through digital means and the role of technology in preventive measures.
During the session, Ambassador Balta emphasized that recruitment via smartphones and social media platforms constitutes formal child recruitment. She highlighted that children are increasingly subject to online radicalization, coercion, and exploitation within conflict zones. The initiative received widespread backing from UN member states and collaboration from organizations including UNICEF, UNESCO, and the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict. The resolution aims to address the challenges posed by modern digital tools in the context of global military engagements and child protection mandates.
