Omonia hosts Benfica in UEFA Europa League clash

Omonia Nicosia hosts Portuguese giants Benfica at the GSP Stadium tonight, October 22, 2026, at 22:00, for the third matchday of the UEFA Europa League League Phase. Omonia enters the contest with six points from their opening two victories against Celta Vigo and Celje. Despite their strong form, manager Henning Berg faces significant squad challenges, missing injured defender Coulibaly alongside several players ineligible for the European squad, including Akintola, Ithing, Kitsos, Musialowski, Odubajo, and Victoros.

Benfica manager Marco Silva, despite facing his own injury crisis with five key absences—including Enzo and Kaminski—has confirmed that Claudio Echeverri will start the match. Analysts, including AEL coach Hugo Martins, identify Benfica as the clear favorite but acknowledge Omonia's tactical progress and the "hot" atmosphere generated by an expected crowd of approximately 14,000 fans. Historically, Portuguese teams have often proven difficult opponents for Cypriot clubs, with Benfica having previously defeated Omonia 3-0 in the 1981-82 European Cup.

While Omonia aims to solidify its position in the standings, the club must balance this high-stakes European encounter with an upcoming critical domestic league match against AEK Larnaca. The match will be broadcast on RIK1/HD.
