UEFA demands transparency from FIFA regarding governance and financial dealings
On Monday, UEFA General Secretary Theodore Theodoridis sent a formal letter to his FIFA counterpart, Mattias Grafstrom, demanding answers to 42 specific questions regarding the global governing body's operations and governance. This ultimatum requires FIFA to provide comprehensive responses within a two-week period, specifically rejecting any attempts to defer these issues to future council meetings or upcoming governance reforms.
The 42 inquiries are categorized into 12 thematic areas, focusing on controversial topics including proposed stakes in FIFA competitions, relationships with investment funds like Thrive, interactions with Donald Trump, the role of Balogun, and transparency regarding FIFA President Gianni Infantino's financial compensation. UEFA emphasized that while Infantino previously acknowledged that errors occurred, the provided explanations have been insufficient to address fundamental concerns about the organization's strategic direction.
This development marks a significant escalation in the ongoing friction between the European and world football governing bodies. UEFA has made it clear that these accountability demands take precedence over previously discussed institutional changes, signaling a firm push for immediate transparency regarding FIFA's current financial and commercial arrangements.
