Cyprus strengthens air defense with additional Israeli Barak MX system
The Republic of Cyprus is augmenting its national air defense capabilities by procuring an additional battery of the Israeli-made Barak MX system. According to reports from the Israeli newspaper Maariv, this deployment is part of a broader strategic plan to establish an integrated air defense shield across the entire Cypriot territory. The Barak MX, manufactured by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), was officially integrated into the National Guard’s operational planning and made its first public appearance during the October 1 military parade in Nicosia.
The system is a sophisticated multi-layered platform capable of intercepting various threats, including drones, cruise missiles, and tactical ballistic missiles, with an operational range of up to 150 kilometers. The move has elicited sharp criticism from Turkish officials, who have characterized the system as more dangerous than the previously discussed Russian S-300s due to its advanced technical capabilities. Reports further indicate that Nicosia is exploring potential future acquisitions of other Israeli defense technologies, such as the Drone Dome, the Lite Beam laser system, and the Iron Dome. However, authorities have stated that no final decisions have been finalized, and no formal discussions regarding these additional systems have been initiated at this time.
