Concerns raised over 40 MW energy storage park in Alampra
During a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Environment on October 14, significant concerns were raised regarding the proposed installation of a 40 MW energy storage facility in the Rotseri area of Alampra. The project entails the placement of 23 large industrial containers for energy storage, located in close proximity to residential zones, with at least one home situated just meters away from the site.
The Struggle Committee Against the Energy Storage Park, supported by the Municipality of South Nicosia-Idali, is demanding the revocation or suspension of the issued permits. They are calling for a mandatory Environmental Impact Assessment to be conducted before any construction begins. Representatives from ETEK and the environmental organization Terra Cypria backed this position, emphasizing the need for formal environmental oversight for such high-risk installations.
Key issues discussed during the committee session included resident safety, fire prevention, and the appropriateness of the chosen location. The Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Environment stated that he would formally request explanations from relevant directors regarding the approval process. The local community remains in opposition, citing significant risks to public safety and lack of proper environmental planning.
