Parliamentary asset declarations withdrawn and corrected following data breach
The Cypriot House of Representatives temporarily removed the asset declarations ('Pothen Esches') of its members from its website on October 20, 2026, after admitting that sensitive personal data had been published by mistake. The leaked information included protected details about parliamentarians’ spouses and minor children, as well as reconciliation statements that are legally restricted from public disclosure.
Following the incident, House President Annita Demetriou ordered an official investigation into the administrative error to determine how the unauthorized data reached the public domain. MP Irene Charalambides condemned the breach as a violation of the legislation governing transparency, while other members, including Giorgos Pamboridis, raised the possibility of criminal liability for the exposure of private information. The error drew significant public scrutiny, particularly regarding the personal financial status of younger members like Efraim Christou, whose declared assets became a topic of intense social media debate.
By the evening of October 21, the House had republished the corrected declarations for 53 of the 56 members. The matter remains under active review and is slated for discussion before the House Institutions Committee and the Conference of Party Leaders to ensure legal compliance and accountability for the incident.
