Former deputy attorney general pleads not guilty to embezzlement charges
Loukis G. Loukaidis, a former Deputy Attorney General of Cyprus and former judge at the European Court of Human Rights, appeared before the Limassol Criminal Court on October 20, 2026. He entered a plea of not guilty to two charges: theft by an agent and money laundering.
The case centers on a sum of €177,108.12, which was paid by the Municipality of Limassol as compensation for the expropriation of a property belonging to a deceased individual. According to the indictment, Loukaidis, while acting as a lawyer and representative for the estate's administrator between 2014 and 2026, allegedly misappropriated these funds instead of transferring them to the estate. The prosecution claims the money was never delivered to the rightful beneficiaries.
The investigation into the matter was triggered by a formal complaint from the administrator of the estate. While the current legal proceedings are focused on the misappropriation of these funds, Loukaidis has previously mentioned that the origins of the legal assignment date back to approximately 2008. The Limassol Criminal Court has scheduled the commencement of the trial for February 9, 2027, where the case will proceed to a full hearing.
