Fatal shark attack at Orient Beach in South Africa
A 65-year-old woman, identified as Janine Lochenberg, died following a shark attack on Tuesday morning at Orient Beach in East London, South Africa. Lochenberg, a retired radiographer and musician known in the local open-water swimming community, was swimming with a group after 9 a.m. when the attack occurred. Despite the victim wearing a specialized magnetic shark repellent bracelet, she sustained two severe bites to her thigh and arm, which proved fatal before she could receive medical intervention.
Witnesses reported that the woman appeared to be struggling while in the water, after which it was realized she had been bitten. Although she was brought back to the shore, responders confirmed her death at the scene. Following the incident, the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality closed Orient Beach and the neighboring Eastern Beach indefinitely as a precautionary measure to ensure public safety.
Local authorities have issued warnings to the public to avoid all waters in the vicinity. The regional municipal government, which referred to the location as KuGompo City, remains in the process of managing the aftermath of the tragedy. Investigations or monitoring of the coastline are expected to continue as part of the safety protocols put in place following the closure.
