Larnaca municipality employs drones for mosquito control
The Larnaca Municipality has officially integrated drone technology into its mosquito control operations to address breeding grounds that are difficult to access via conventional methods. On Friday, October 16, the Municipal Health Service conducted its first successful targeted aerial spraying operation in a challenging, previously inaccessible site. This strategic decision aims to enhance the overall effectiveness of public health interventions throughout the city and its surrounding municipal districts.
Local authorities intend to make the use of drones a permanent feature of their mosquito management strategy. The initiative focuses on early intervention and systematic monitoring, with specific measures targeting mosquito species such as Aedes aegypti, which can pose health risks. Officials have emphasized that as further hard-to-reach areas are identified, these specialized drone-based interventions will continue to be deployed as part of broader anti-malaria and pest control efforts, mirroring successful strategies previously utilized in Nicosia.
