Averof Neophytou files nominations for the DISY party presidential candidacy
On Thursday, October 22, 2026, former DISY president Averof Neophytou submitted his support documents at the party headquarters in Nicosia, signaling his bid for the 2028 presidential election candidacy. He delivered over 3,000 signatures from party members across all provinces, significantly exceeding the statutory requirement of 500. The submission was supported by several high-ranking party officials, including President Annita Demetriou and Deputy President Efthymios Diplaros.
His primary opponent, George Pamboridis, has also expressed his intent to seek the party nomination. Pamboridis has publicly called for a binding commitment from all internal candidates, suggesting that the loser of the internal primary should pledge not to run as an independent in the general election. While Neophytou has emphasized unity and a desire for healthy competition, he has not yet formally agreed to this condition, stating only that he looks forward to the race.
The party is scheduled to officially register all candidacies on Monday, October 26. Following an internal validation process, the electoral congress will be held on November 28, 2026, to determine who will represent DISY in the national presidential race. Former President Nicos Anastasiades has maintained a position of strict neutrality, holding private consultations with both contenders during this period.
