Blind trainees report unsafe transport conditions to School for the Blind
The Pancyprian Organization of the Blind has issued formal complaints regarding the unsafe and unsuitable transport of approximately 25 visually impaired trainees commuting from the Larnaca and Famagusta districts to the School for the Blind in Nicosia. The trainees, who spend over two hours on the road per trip, have reported mechanical failures, broken doors, and faulty windows in the 20-seat minibus contracted by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports. These grievances have persisted for over two years, with the organization citing a recent incident in Aradippou where seven passengers were forced to exit the vehicle on a busy road due to a mechanical breakdown.
In response to the recurring hazards, including a lack of professional supervision and hygiene issues, the organization and the Cyprus Confederation of Organizations of the Disabled (KYSOAA) have demanded an immediate replacement of the vehicle. Christakis Nikolaidis, president of the organization, stated that attempts to reach the Ministry of Education have remained largely unanswered. Trainees have expressed such frustration regarding the situation that some have threatened to boycott classes until a safe and accessible transport alternative is provided. The organization has formally requested urgent intervention from the school's board and the relevant ministry.
