EU project GEMS develops AI tool to monitor extremist activity in gaming spaces
The European Commission's Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs announced on Tuesday the progress of the GEMS project, which stands for Gaming Ecosystem as a Multilayered Security Threat. This initiative aims to address the growing risks of terrorist and violent extremist groups using online gaming communities to identify, target, and radicalize vulnerable individuals.
As part of this project, researchers have developed an AI-powered platform called Watchtower. Designed to assist law enforcement analysts, the tool monitors public online conversations across major platforms including YouTube Live, Twitch, Reddit, and Discord. The platform is currently undergoing operational testing and refinement in collaboration with the Irish police and various other European law enforcement agencies, allowing officers to evaluate its effectiveness using real-world public data.
The project addresses the security challenges posed by the shift of extremist recruitment tactics into digital gaming environments. By utilizing artificial intelligence, authorities hope to improve their ability to detect and prevent potential threats early. Testing is ongoing as officials continue to refine the system's capabilities for broader integration into European security protocols.
