Alberta votes to remain part of Canada in non-binding referendum
On Monday, October 19, 2026, voters in the oil-rich province of Alberta overwhelmingly rejected a proposal to initiate the legal process for potential secession from Canada. In a non-binding referendum, results indicate that approximately 76.5% to 77% of participants voted to remain part of the Canadian federation, while only 23% to 23.5% supported starting the steps toward independence.
The vote, which saw over one million ballots counted, was held under the administration of Alberta Premier Danielle Smith. Although she personally opposed secession, Smith authorized the referendum following pressure from separatist factions within her party. The outcome provides a significant political victory for Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who is currently managing a domestic unification effort amid a broader trade conflict with the United States.
Following the results, Prime Minister Carney praised the decision, stating that the citizens of Alberta chose national unity. The defeat of the motion effectively halts immediate plans for an independence drive, bringing stability to the region as the federal government focuses on economic challenges.
