Swiss air traffic control operates at reduced capacity due to technical fault
On October 20, 2026, the Swiss air traffic control authority, Skyguide, announced a major technical malfunction affecting its operations. As a precautionary measure to maintain aviation safety, the agency reduced its overall capacity to 50 percent. The issue was identified as a defect in the radar display system, a critical tool utilized by controllers for monitoring and guiding aircraft within Swiss airspace.
The malfunction caused a temporary halt to takeoff and landing procedures at Switzerland's two primary international hubs, Zurich and Geneva airports. While the agency has since resumed operations at both locations, the significant reduction in capacity is expected to result in continued flight delays throughout the day. Skyguide officially stated that there is no indication that the malfunction was caused by a cyberattack. The decision to operate at half capacity remains in place as a preventative safety step while the technical team manages the system error.
