Turkey issues Navtex for geophysical surveys concerning the EMC data cable
On October 20, 2026, Turkey issued a new maritime notification (NAVTEX 1032/26) regarding geophysical surveys in the Eastern Mediterranean. These surveys, which relate to the East to Med Data Corridor (EMC) submarine data cable, are scheduled to commence on October 21, 2026, and will continue until further notice.
The operations are to be conducted by the vessel S/V Kobi Ruegg along two specific routes in the Mediterranean. According to the announcement, the surveys will take place within 10-nautical-mile-wide zones, extending five nautical miles on either side of the predefined paths. Passing vessels are instructed to maintain a safety distance of at least five nautical miles.
Ankara asserts that these activities are taking place within its continental shelf, citing external limits previously communicated to the United Nations on March 18, 2020, through document A/74/757. Turkish authorities claim that all research work has been fully coordinated and approved by the relevant Turkish institutions, which have granted official permission for the project. The announcement reflects Turkey's ongoing stance regarding its maritime jurisdiction in the region.
