Democratic Alignment party urges action against Turkey-Libya memorandum
On October 21, 2026, the Democratic Alignment (DEPA) party in Cyprus issued a formal call for concrete actions against the memorandum of understanding signed between Turkey and Libya. The party argues that current European rhetoric is insufficient to protect sovereign rights and maintain stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.
DEPA urges the governments of Cyprus and Greece to launch a coordinated diplomatic initiative involving the European Union, the United Nations, and other international partners. The proposal includes creating a unified legal and political documentation of the memorandum’s consequences. Furthermore, the party suggests the implementation of targeted European sanctions against individuals or entities involved in activities that violate the sovereign rights of EU member states or attempt to operationalize the agreement.
This initiative follows long-standing tensions regarding maritime boundaries and regional geopolitical challenges. The party emphasizes that diplomatic pressure must be coupled with the activation of European mechanisms to ensure that institutional support is translated into tangible deterrent measures. DEPA also advocates for closer coordination with regional nations that uphold the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea to prevent further destabilization.
