Greek foreign minister rejects Turkey-Libya memorandum
Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis stated on October 21, 2026, that the Turkey-Libya memorandum remains invalid and will not be implemented under any circumstances. His comments followed the ratification of the agreement by the Libyan House of Representatives the previous day. Gerapetritis emphasized that the accord remains outside the framework of international law and carries no additional legal value, warning that both Ankara and Tripoli must accept the consequences of their actions.
The Greek minister reaffirmed that Athens maintains a consistent foreign policy based on international law, aiming to defend national sovereignty without escalating tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean. He recalled that the European Union leadership, including European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, has previously expressed concerns regarding the agreement. Athens continues to reject the pact as a violation of its sovereign rights.
