Defendants in Marfin bank arson case face upgraded terrorism charges
On Wednesday, October 21, 2026, two of the three defendants in the May 5, 2010, Marfin bank arson attack appeared before an Athens judge. A 46-year-old woman, who was extradited from Brighton, UK, and one of two 42-year-old male co-defendants, presented their testimonies regarding upgraded charges, including homicide in the context of a terrorist act and attempted homicide against 24 employees who were inside the Stadiou Street branch during the incident. The second 42-year-old defendant is scheduled to testify this Friday, October 23.
Following the conclusion of their supplementary testimonies, both the 46-year-old woman and the 42-year-old man were ordered to remain in custody. During the proceedings, the female defendant submitted a 59-page memorandum categorically denying any involvement in the arson or violent acts, maintaining she only participated in a peaceful demonstration. The fatal attack in 2010 resulted in the deaths of three employees, including Angeliki Papathanasopoulou, who was pregnant.
This judicial development follows the state's move to elevate the legal charges to terrorism-related crimes. While the defendants have been in custody, the ongoing process marks a significant step in the long-standing case regarding the tragedy that occurred during widespread protests in Athens.
