Famagusta green points remain closed over funding disputes
Four newly constructed green points in the Famagusta district remain non-operational despite being largely complete. During a session of the House Environment Committee on October 21, 2026, it was revealed that the Famagusta District Local Government Organisation (DLGO) has refused to take responsibility for the sites, citing concerns that local municipal authorities will fail to contribute their share of the necessary operating costs.
The facilities are located in Deryneia, Sotira, Avgorou, and Ayia Napa. Kostas Konstantinou, director general of the General Directorate of the Environment, confirmed that three sites have already been handed over by the contractor, with the Deryneia location scheduled for completion by the end of October. The Interior Ministry has attempted to resolve the impasse by proposing to deduct operating costs directly from the local councils' state grants to ensure guaranteed funding for the DLGO.
There is significant pressure to resolve this issue quickly, as three of the sites were co-funded by European Union recovery funds. Failure to bring these facilities into operation risks potential repercussions regarding the use of these EU grants. The committee continues to oversee the matter as the Ministry and the DLGO work toward a formal agreement to activate the waste management infrastructure.
