Match-fixing scandal breaks out in Greek basketball
Greek basketball is facing a major scandal following the issuance of arrest warrants for six individuals, including Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK) president Vangelis Liolios, referees, and committee members. The authorities are investigating widespread allegations of bribery, match-fixing, and illicit betting practices spanning from 2018 to 2026. Protected witnesses, including a referee and a team official, have provided testimony regarding controlled officiating outcomes and external pressure exerted on players and clubs to manipulate competition results.
Panathinaikos owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos has publicly hailed the investigation, alleging systemic corruption and claiming that 820,000 euros in cash were discovered in a referee's home. Conversely, Olympiacos BC has issued a statement distancing the club from the investigation, emphasizing their commitment to fair play while accusing Giannakopoulos of using the scandal to further his own interests. AEK BC also commented on the revelations, noting that their prior complaints regarding officiating irregularities are now being substantiated.
The ongoing investigation continues to unfold, with judicial authorities reviewing extensive evidence, including testimonies of systemic bribery and coerced contract terminations. The involved parties await further legal proceedings as the sports community anticipates the full extent of the court’s findings.
